When you cannot draw a line to separate two regions, you are forced to separate them structurally — with a tonal plane, a shift in elevation, or deliberate whitespace. The interface stops being a set of boxes and becomes a set of architectural slabs.
Depth Without Shadow
Tonal stacking — placing a lighter surface on a darker container — creates a soft lift that reads as architecture rather than a digital drop shadow. The result is calmer, more legible from a distance, and impossible to fake with a border.
